About Us

The people and story behind Metaphormosa.

Our Mission

Metaphormosa exists to fund, create, and present art that celebrates Taiwanese heritage and makes it accessible to new audiences. We believe that culture lives through creative expression — through the objects we build, the rituals we share, and the stories we tell.

Our work spans gallery installations, large-scale sculptural pieces, community gatherings, and cultural programming. Whether on the playa at Burning Man or in urban spaces across the United States, we bring Taiwanese visual traditions, folk art, and temple architecture into dialogue with contemporary art practice.

The name Metaphormosa fuses metamorphosis — transformation — with Formosa, the Portuguese name for Taiwan, meaning "beautiful island." This fusion is at the heart of everything we do: honoring tradition while embracing change, building bridges between cultures, and creating spaces where identity can be explored, expressed, and celebrated.

Our Story

Metaphormosa was founded in 2025 by a group of artists, builders, and cultural organizers based between Brooklyn and California. United by a shared connection to Taiwanese heritage and a passion for large-scale art, they set out to create an organization that could support ambitious cultural projects — the kind that require community, resources, and a willingness to build something extraordinary.

What began as a single art installation for Burning Man has grown into a nonprofit dedicated to bringing Taiwanese identity into new creative contexts. We are artists, engineers, designers, and dreamers — and we are just getting started.
